Tommy Boy (Holy Schnike Edition)

Tommy Boy (Holy Schnike Edition)The late Chris Farley teams up with his Saturday Night Live pal David Spade for this road comedy about a perpetual screwup, Tommy Callahan Jr. (Farley), who tries to save the auto-parts store owned by his late father (Brian Dennehy). The latter's dry-witted number cruncher (Spade) reluctantly joins the loud, awkward, but well-meaning Tommy in the mission, which is threatened behind the scenes by his dad's widow (Bo Derek). The film is sporadically funny, but as with most movies starring TV comics, some vital energy in the stars seems unnaturally suppressed. Still, the film is worth a visit if you want to turn off your brain awhile. --Tom Keogh

Capitalism: A Love Story

Michael Moore's didactic documentary style is actually a source of inspiration in Capitalism: A Love Story. This film, which explores the history of incongruence between American capitalism and democracy, is evidently a culmination of Moore's lifetime of research into this topic: he begins the movie by admitting his longstanding interest, rooted in childhood experiences in Flint, Michigan. As a result, the film displays an expertise that is less irritating than in Moore's earlier works, in which various loopholes can be found in one-sided presentations (see Bowling for Columbine). Here Moore employs his trademark tactics to make a satirical documentary that functions as a film-based, grassroots political strategy meant to provoke revolt. Consisting of patched-together clips from various eras and media outlets, the film weaves a narrative that underscores Moore's argument that while America is a success because of its democracy, it has been denigrated by capitalism, which he calls "a system of taking and giving, mostly taking." Capitalism: A Love Story is a patriotic call to arms that seeks to ignite rage in the viewer who is tired of political stupidity resulting in poverty and hardship among a dwindling middle class. It begins by tracing the growing gap between the rich and poor, from the Depression through the 1950s "free enterprise" boom. Using clips of FDR and Jimmy Carter warning against greed and inequality, Moore shows how gradually Americans came to accept Reaganomics, corporate corruption, then Bush-era swindling over time. This history serves as context for his explanation of the housing crisis, the collapse of banks, and Bush's covert, last-ditch efforts to pass sketchy bills on the cusp of Obama's election. Moore asks several lawyers, senators, and bankers, "What the **** happened?" and each offers intelligent assessments of situations that many American viewers still struggle to comprehend. Unfortunately, there are corny Moore moments throughout the film, such as when he takes an armored truck to various banking headquarters and harasses security guards to let him in to reclaim money stolen from the American public. Clips of Bush dancing juxtaposed with shots of people crying because they've lost their homes are melodramatic and only weaken Moore's arguments. Like Robin Hood, Moore seeks justice, but his greatest strength is as a translator between those speaking a complex political language and his viewers. Capitalism: A Love Story, while it does have a condescending tone throughout, does much to relay a complicated history that we all need to know for the sake of our own empowerment. --Trinie Dalton

Risky Business [VHS]

Risky Business [VHS]Little did Tom Cruise know that he would become a box-office superstar after he cranked up some Bob Seeger and played air guitar in his underwear. But there's more to this 1983 hit than the arrival of a hot young star. Making a stylish debut, writer-director Paul Brickman crafted a subtle satire of crass materialism wrapped in an irresistible plot about a crafty high schooler named Joel (Cruise) who goes into risky business with the beguiling prostitute Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) while his parents are out of town. Joel turns his affluent Chicago-suburb home into a lucrative bordello and forms a steamy personal and professional partnership with Lana, but only as long as the two can avoid the vengeful pimp Guido (Joe Pantoliano) and keep their customers happy. A signature film of the 1980s, Risky Business still holds up thanks to Cruise's effortless charm and the movie's timeless appeal as an adolescent male fantasy. --Jeff Shannon

Boy Meets World: The Complete First Season

Boy Meets World: The Complete First SeasonBoy Meets World joined the ABC network's successful "TGIF" lineup in 1993, and instantly distinguished itself from the dewy-eyed hokum that passes for much family viewing with its relative sophistication, emotional complexity, and smart, stylish dialogue. In a way, Boy Meets World, starring Ben Savage, picked up where ABC's The Wonder Years (1988-1993), featuring older brother Fred Savage, left off. Both shows looked at the world from the point of view of largely unformed and untested boys as they faced dilemmas concerning love, loyalty, and ethics within their families, among friends, and at school. But where The Wonder Years was an arch and poignant series with nostalgic, grown-up appeal--and which had a young hero often at a loss for words--BMW looked more like a broader, conventional sitcom where chatter never ceased. The show was and is more easily taken for granted, but its unusual gracefulness and wit can't be denied after a couple of viewings.

Boy Meets World lasted seven seasons, and one of the real pleasures of following the series is that its story and character changes are largely organic, rather than forced by cast departures or other pressures. Thus the auspicious first meeting of Savage's 11-year-old Cory Matthews and his classmate Topanga (Danielle Fishel) in season 1 leads, quite sweetly and logically, to a deeper relationship in subsequent seasons. Cory's attachment to his formidable yet compassionate 6th-grade teacher, Mr. Feeny (William Daniels in a tailor-made performance), who also happens to be Cory's neighbor, grows and deepens as Feeny eventually becomes the principal at Cory's high school and a mentor beyond. Season 1 also introduces Cory's likeable father (William Russ), a grocery store manager, and mother (Betsy Randle), a homemaker and realtor, as well as appealing siblings Eric (Will Friedle) and Morgan (Lindsay Ridgeway) and best friend Shawn (Rider Strong). A slightly surreal tone (a little similar to Family Ties) keeps the jokes coming, but BMW is at its most touching when Cory's awareness of and empathy for the needs of others expands. --Tom Keogh

    Hans Christian Andersen's Thumbelina

Hans Christian Andersen's ThumbelinaRanking just behind the best of animator Don Bluth's films (Anastasia and The Secret of NIMH), Thumbelina is a bubble-light version of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. The finger-sized heroine goes about the old-fashioned trials of trying to find a good man, but the film is clever enough to make it endearing for the 3-6 set and more than passable for adult viewers. Barry Manilow provides much of the song score, which helps immensely. The ballad "Let Me Be Your Wings" is as good as Disney's best. Carol Channing and Charo have a good ol' time with their songs too. The voice of Thumbelina is none other than Jodi Benson, who gave voice to Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid. --Doug Thomas

In this age of technology, it’s not as mandatory to actually work a 9-5 job (or even leave the house, for that matter) to earn income. There are many ways that people with basic computer skills can earn money on the Internet. Does it sound too good to be true? It’s really not.

One way to earn money on the Internet is by developing your own company, whether it be offering a service or selling your own products. Creating a Web site is a must for this endeavor. Marketing and promoting your product or service is yet another task.

Find your niche. If you like to design and create children’s clothing, consider opening an online kids clothing store. You would first need to apply pictures of your products onto your Web site, detailing product information and sales prices. Subscribe to a payment tool, such as PayPal, as a way for customers to purchase your items online. Adding a shopping cart feature is another consumer-friendly tool.

If going into business for yourself is not something you are not willing to risk, there are many work-at-home opportunities listed on the Internet, from data entry jobs to sales. The most important aspect of choosing such a company to work for is determining their status. Is this a scam? Will they trick me into scamming other innocent people? The best way is to check the company’s reputation is through the Better Business Bureau.

Freelancing is yet another option to earn money on the Internet. Perhaps you have a gift for writing or graphic design. Capitalize on this skill by checking freelance sites for work opportunities. This is not as risky as working for yourself in the sense that you are actually getting paid by companies on your terms. However, there may come a point and time when the need for this type of work slows down, or even comes to a complete halt. That is something to consider when planning freelance as a way to earn money on the Internet.

Perhaps a very simple way to earn money on the Internet is by acting as an online advertisement. This involves developing a Web site dedicated to a certain subject, such as shoes, and writing content and adding pictures that will attract visitors to your site. The next step to earning money on the Internet through advertising is to join an affiliate program. These are companies who will allow you to post links to their sites that feature their sales products which relates to your Web site. When the link on your Web site is clicked, and a purchase is made, you will then receive commission from the purchase. The key to success with this endeavor is to develop an attractive and informative Web site on your subject and continue to update and add new content as an incentive for visitors to return.

You've made the decision to start your own business; its time to begin developing a successful home business plan.

The first step, of course, is to decide just what type of business you'd like to operate. Start by pinpointing your hobbies, personal interests and subjects you've always seemed to have a naturally knack for. Perhaps you've always had a love of animals. Considering opening a full-service kennel might be the type of home business plan you need to look into. Maybe you are a stay-at-home mom who absolutely adores children. Creating a home daycare of preschool might be an option. Is mathematics your game? Accountants are needed for all types of financial institutions, including businesses, banks and financing companies. Individuals are also potential customers.

Yet another aspect to consider as part of your home business plan is whether you would like to act as the sole service provider or whether you would prefer to be in the background, as in just managing your home business. Consider whether your business plan is profitable enough to allow for employee compensation, and just how many employees you might be able to have on payroll. If you project that you would be in need of a few hands to run your business, but don't see an enough profit allowance for paying employees, an option would be to contact local universities and junior colleges to offer a non-paid internship. In turn, the education institution would provide credit to the student for a semester of work.

As long as we're talking about income, consider the fact that a home business plan does not provide health insurance coverage. Can you live without it? Will your company provide enough funds to purchase private insurance? Does your spouse have insurance through his or her job that could cover the family?

Those who are brainstorming a business plan may be deterred by start-up costs. Begin with calculating the exact cost of opening your business. Add in operating costs for the first month as you may struggle financially during your first weeks of work, and there will be extra bills that come along with conducting business matters. Consider small business loans from banks, personal loans from family members or contacting investors and sponsors for help.

As you are just beginning your home business plan, having the best of the best is not necessary. Try to cut corners as much as possible.

For instance, if you cannot afford computer set-up and Internet service just yet, check the availability of your library's computer lab to research or e-mail business contacts. If you are need of furniture for your home business, such as desks and chairs, check out second-hand stores or place an ad in the newspaper asking for donations.

The key to succeeding in your home business plan is to firmly believe that your dream is possible. If you run into a roadblock, simply take another avenue.

    Hey, did you know that...

Once the website is designed and ready to be uploaded, one should choose a proper business hosting and internet services provider. Some hosting companies provide free internet with the package. One should set up a wireless network using wireless router to gain flexibility in being mobile. Business communication can be done through any good quality internet phone around the world.

With a little extra income, you could afford to buy some things that are not within your budget right now. There are many scams online, but there are also many opportunities that are proven to work and will make you some decent extra income.

One good source of income is displaying other people's ads on your website. When someone clicks on one of these ads, you get paid. The ads are relevant to your webpage content to make it more likely for someone to want to visit the links. If you have a website or blog that has a lot of visitors, you can make some good money with this option.

Many people are making money online using online data entry. There are places on the internet that will pay you to put information into a form and submit it. If you like to just be able to sign in and perform a service for a fee then this may be the job for you. It is well worth checking out as it is an easy way to make some extra dollars and doesn't require a lot of work.

Affiliate marketing is perhaps one of the best ways to earn some extra income online especially if you don't have your own products to sell. You simply promote other people's products and collect a commission when they buy from your special link displayed on your website or in your advertisements. There are many places where you can sign up to sell products as an affiliate.

Selling on eBay is a great way to make extra cash online. If you have a lot of stuff laying around that you no longer use, this would be a good option for you. The sign up is free and then you will need to create a seller account. They will direct you to sign up for PayPal if you do not already have an account with them, which greatly increases your success as a seller there. They will guide you through the easy process of setting up your auction. Find a product you want to sell and then research it to see how it is selling. If you need help or tips for making better sales on eBay you can easily find this information also.

When you are interested in home business real estate, but you have a full time job, it can be difficult to try to find time to take classes after work. Many real estate schools are full time opportunities, which can make things even more difficult. However, you can fulfill your dreams and still earn that paycheck with home business real estate classes online. There are millions of people just like you doing it, so you can too. Just take a look at these things to look for when enrolling for classes and you will be on your way to learning all you need to know about real estate and home business.

    Course Offerings

When you look into taking online home business real estate classes, you will need to be sure that you know what you are taking. For instance, you need to know if the courses you take will be able to certify you as an agent or otherwise. If you are simply taking classes to get a better understanding, then it really doesn’t matter. However, if you are wanting to get licensed to be a real estate agent, you need to know if your courses will be helpful or not.

    Costs

Taking courses online can be quite expensive. So when you are looking for your home business real estate classes online, you need to be sure you know what the costs are. Look for hidden costs of text books, fees, and other things that might not be as clear as the tuition costs. Some businesses that offer classes will try to sneak other fees in, without you even knowing about them until it is way too late to back out. Just be prepared to ask the total costs, with books and all.

    Length

Another thing you will want to consider is the length of the course. You should think about your life schedule and what you can take time for. If you are taking courses in the summer, be sure you think about vacation and if your vacation will conflict with your courses. In addition, if you are starting a family, think about the time that will take up. Be sure you find a program that works with your life well.

Overall, when you find a program for home business real estate online classes that seems to be what you want, at your budget level, and for the length of time you can afford to spend, be sure that you sign up. The sooner you get started toward your dream, the better off you will be. Make sure you consider everything however before beginning. After all, there may be a better deal around the corner. You must do your research to decide if that is the case or not.

As an online business owner, one of your preoccupations is increasing your site traffic. If you have been in business for even a short period of time, you know that the key to getting more hits is by optimizing for the search engines. Most people use the search engines to find the sites they are looking for, so it is in your best interests to achieve as high a page ranking as you can.

Search engine optimization is vital to your business, but you should not overlook another method for increasing your site traffic: getting listed in an internet business directory. Internet business directories work in the same way that yellow pages work for traditional pages. To wit, they are listings of the various businesses operating on the web. To make the listings more tenable to use, the sites are grouped according to different categories. Sites can be listed by topics or regions, for example. Different business directories use different criteria to categorize its sites.

The reason you want to get listed in an internet business directory is simple: people use directories to find sites. While getting listed in an internet business directory is not as important as getting optimized for the search engines, it can nevertheless contribute to an increase in your site traffic. People use directories to find a wide variety of sites pertaining to topics they are interested in. Obviously, not being listed is a disadvantage.

To have your site listed in an internet business directory, you must first identify the directories that you feel will be most conducive to your business’ success. Next, you will have to submit your site for possible inclusion. If your site is legitimate, you should have no problem getting accepted. After being reviewed, your site will be indexed in the most appropriate category.

Here some excellent examples of internet business directories:

AME Info (www.ameinfo.com) – A business directory listing almost 200, 000 Middle Eastern companies.
AT&T Directories (www.att.com/directory/index.html) – This site can help you find a persons and/ or business by name or phone number.
Big Book (www.bigbook.com) – A listing of businesses within the United States. You can search for a business using its name, location, or category.
BizEurope.com Resources (www.bizeurope.com/bsr/manu/resource.htm) - A listing of European companies involved in importing and exporting.
British Companies (www.britishcompanies.co.uk) – a listing of British consumer product companies.
British Services (www.britishservices.co.uk) – a listing of British service providers.
Business.com (www.business.com) – This site also doubles as a search engine. You can find products, services, companies and jobs here.
Corporate Affiliations (www.corporateaffiliations.com) – lists companies that have merged, changed names, or gone out of business.
Europages: European Business Directory (www.europages.com) – Europages lists the addresses of half a million companies from thirty European countries. The site can be viewed in six languages.

This listing is not meant to be a comprehensive one, but it should be sufficient to get you started. Remember that internet business directories can help you increase your market reach, so you should never overlook them!
